Thortful was the UK's first greetings card marketplace. Today, over 4,000 creators sell their designs to millions of customers. I created Thortful's display typeface to make their communications ownable.
After an overhaul of Thortful's advertising approach, with the introduction of joyful brand characters called Thortles, we wanted every one of the brand's communications to mimic their playful nature.
We introduced a custom typeface that brings Thortful's tongue-in-cheek messaging to life, with unique shifts and curves in select letterforms.
Not every typeface needs to be serious. Set in a chunky weight, Thortful Sans lands joy and energy whether set in uppercase or lowercase, striking the right balance for the brand between personality and legibility.
Custom ligatures were created for words that frequently appear in their messaging, but are unusual pairings to see in a typical typeface – take "tf" in the brand name for example.
When paired in application with the Thortle characters, a vibrant colour palette and hand-drawn scribbles and accents, there is an undeniable charm radiating from everything Thortful.
